Camp Casey Chronicles 08/25/05

If this is the counterinsurgency I am concerned! What fills this camp is a huge group of middle aged women with floppy hats and sagging breasts from nursing those kids who intended to serve their country and ended up building bases in Iraq for Bush and boys.

Joining us is an entire contingent of older-than-middle-aged men who know the meaning of war from the inside out. Many of them date back to the "Great War" WWII. Some with cowboy hats, bolo ties and "Hi, Ya'll" accents. Some of them can't hear anymore, but they are INTO it

And then there are the Viet Nam vets who look pretty darn good, considering! They actually look younger than I figured they would. I am certain that some of them die their hair 'cause they aren't as gray as I am!

Followed by the the Iraq Vets Against the War who are gentle giants -- so young, so reminding me of my own son. One towering Marine plays taps each night at dusk, as we gather around the crosses. Last night we were joined by yet another Gold Star mother. Wearing her grief fresh.

And then there are those younger ones who have a social conscience and come with concern and doubt. Worried that their generation is not paying attention. They don't look too dangerous to me. Tatoos, nose rings and head bands to boot. Mighty scary crowd!

We drove in this morning to find boots lining the grass in front of the crosses, Cindy giving an interview with new media that is finally getting it that this is happening. Even Fox News finally arrived. Clean cut, slick young man he is. He challenged Cindy that Bush says that the families with whom he has met don't agree with her about the war.

I approached him after the press conference to remind him that Bush only meets with families who agree with him -- screened as they are "for security purposes" -- their own, no doubt! I offered to give him an interview but he apparently had enough material to be "fair and balanced" because when I refused to tell him where my son is stationed, he said that he could not talk with me. I am not sure of the relevance of where "he" is stationed but it appeared vital. Not using his name for his own protection.

I showed up for kitchen duty just in time to make bison burgers, but immediately sliced my index finger open so am relegated to blogging with three fingers on my left hand. Not to be thwarted, type on!

Pray for a breeze. I now understand why Bush believes in hell!

I am so proud of what you are doing and I THANK YOU for showing up! I feel represented well while I am at home and not present for our troops, our country, and for peace.

A heavy saddness fills my heart when I think of the men and women who have shown an incredible committment to serve in our country as soldiers, families, and as peaceful objectors. Can we not show compassion and still support the young men and women who serve in the military?

Peace and gratitude to you.

Love to the families out there who grieve, hope to the troops, and may your voices be heard in honor of those lives that have been lost.

The loss of life no doubt effects us all deeply. I wonder if it effects the folks over at FOX News et al, and cannot spend a moment wondering how they do not 'get it'. I send them thoughts of Peace, and perhaps awareness or compassion ... may it 'appear' in their lives, someday.
