Camp Casey 08/26/05
Good Morning, America!
Finishing a Whataburger with cheese and "no katchup" for breakfast, we drove out to Crawford, stopping to take a picture of the two "Barbie" cowgirl posts that guard the entrance to a ranch house. With those breasts, who would dare trespass? The Barbie's are made of black sheet metal, but this morning for the first time they have white hats and painted boots. Gettin' dressed up for the weekend, I guess!
Down in the center of town, at the blinking light, is Texas Star gift shop with the "biggest selection of Bush items in the world." No doubt. On the side of the building stands a huge banner "We love W" with "George" on one side, "Laura" on the other, and a civil war cannon on the roof above, painted red white and blue. Beside the cannon flies an American flag waving for liberty. A picture will be posted tonight on this site. The signal in the tent is too weak to upload.
The owner donated a plot beside the Star for Fort Qualls, the pro Bush counter movement. They have several large tents, lots of signs, including one with a scripture with something about overcoming evil with good, and blaring transmission alternating hymns (Onward Christian Soldiers, marching as to War) with Rush Limbaugh saying that Cindy Sheehan is "bringing America down" and calling her a liberal, Communist wh...e. I didn't know we had a Communist threat, but I will talk with her about it today for sure. How vulnerable are we if a mourning mother can bring us down? I am gettin' concerned.
Two days ago the Houston Chronicle reported that 10,000 Bush supporters are coming in on a caravan from San Diego. One of the military dads, a hard core Marine who sits beside me at the table, called Air America in San Diego this morning and they told him that 5 folks left the parking lot for the caravan. They are supposed to arrive in the WalMart parking lot soon. We'll be waitin' for them.
Now, I think that the Fort Qualls folks must be restin' up for the weekend and gettin' ready for greetin' all those folks because for the past three days there have only been three or four people there, awful lonely in those big 'ole tents. Even this morning there were only five, although the press states that there are hundreds. We can't find them. Must be restin' up!
Now over here at Camp Casey II, the military family table is filling up. Since I cut my finger yesterday, I am able to sit with the Blue Star (active) and Gold Star (inactive due to death) families, and recruit members for Military Families Speak Out. One dad from Bastrop, Texas (google that!) just told me that Baghdad is the now the proud home of McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and Kentucky Fried Chicken. His daughter just returned and his son has done two tours. He intended to be a career soldier, but is rethinking that. He will be leaving as soon as his re-enlistment date arrives.
I am wondering why Baghdad needs fast food to support such a short term project? Just until the Iraqi's can take over. I know that they will love fast food so when we leave, we will just keep feedin' them, along with the Haliburton crew, and all of those folks who will be takin' care of the 14 U.S. military bases that we are in the process of building! Just for a while, Lord, just for a while.
Tomorrow, there will be two big events.
First, George W. is hosting a catfish fry for the entire press that has come in to cover the counterinsurgency. (This is not a joke.) That will keep them occupied so they won't cover the legions at Fort Qualls.
Second, we here at Military Families Speak Out will be meeting with military families from Fort Qualls. Should be interesting. Just a bunch of caring parents who love their kids and feel differently about what to do. We are all at a loss, in every way.
Let us hope that we don't have to lose more while we figure it out.
